about

The title of Jucamaya’s second album, Curious Terrain, was inspired by a trip which I made to Utah, USA and its famous canyons. Here the terrain is decidedly curious and especially so at Antelope Canyon where I took the CD cover photo.

Jucamaya is a contemporary jazz quintet which was active around the period 2005-15, but could easily be “re-assembled” if need be. The musicians were all active on the Midlands UK jazz scene and the primary reason for me bringing them together was to explore the opportunities to play my original music. I try to write tunes that are melodic and memorable, with an obvious rhythmic kick, sometimes quirky, but always in tune with the jazz tradition. Most of the tracks on this album are my original compositions and arrangements, but I have also included a Keith Jarrett tune called My Song, which illustrates that sometimes the simplest of melodies can move you the most. Ian Hill on soprano sax does a fine job here, injecting great emotion into its plaintive melody. The album also includes a tune called Silver’s Serenade, one of my favourites in the Horace Silver catalogue.

The musical terrain may be a curious but hopefully not inaccessible to your ears. Thanks for listening.
